Oversize Transport Permits

Permissible dimensions without the need to obtain a permit

  • 16.50 m × 2.50 m × 4.00 m, weight up to 48 t

Exceeding any of the above parameters (dimensions, gross weight, or axle loads) already requires obtaining a permit for oversized transport.

In Spain, there are four types of permits depending on the geographic area:

  • National – covers the entire territory of Spain
  • Catalan – covers Catalonia
  • Basque – covers the Basque Country
  • Navarre – covers Navarre

The type of permit depends on the route and the vehicle’s dimensions.

Division of permits by dimensions

  1. First category – general
    • Dimensions: 20.50 × 3 × 4.50 m
    • Weight: up to 60 t
    • Pilot not required
    • Processing time: 1–2 weeks
  2. Second category – general
    • Dimensions: 25 × 3.50 × 4.50 m
    • Weight: up to 60 t
    • Pilot required
    • Processing time: 1–2 weeks
  3. Special route permit (itinerary)
    • Dimensions larger than in the second category
    • Pilot required
    • Processing time: about 2 weeks (depending on dimensions and route)

Number of trips covered by a single permit

  • Permits are valid until their expiry date; the number of trips is not limited.

Validity:

  • General permits: 4–5 years
  • Special permits: 1–2 years

Geographical scope of permits

  • General permits cover the entire area concerned:
    • Catalonia → Catalonia
    • Basque Country → Basque Country
    • Navarre → Navarre
    • National → entire territory of Spain
  • Route permits apply only to the specified route.
    • Example: a trip from La Jonquera to Catalonia requires only a Catalan permit.

Usually 1 to 4 weeks, depending on the type of permit, the vehicle’s dimensions, and the route.

It is not possible to extend the validity of an already issued permit. In such a case, a new permit must be applied for.

  • Manufacturer’s catalogue card/data sheet (COC) for the tractor unit and trailer (available in various languages)
  • Registration certificates of the tractor units and trailers
  • Driver’s license
  • Financial documents (leasing, rental) for the tractor units, if they are financed

In accordance with the guidelines specified in the permit.

For weights above:

  • 80 t in Catalonia
  • 100 t in the rest of the country

A feasibility study report prepared by a licensed engineer is required.

Cancellation costs depend on the stage of order processing and the timing of the cancellation in relation to the planned start of the escort operation.

The same principle applies to permit cancellations — the later the cancellation is made, the higher the potential costs, resulting from preparatory work already completed, submitted applications, and allocated resources.

Organization of Oversize Transport Operations

Oversize transport is a complex logistics operation that requires precision, experience, and excellent coordination.

???? Professional Route Planning
We analyse every kilometre of the route: bridge load capacity, turning radii, roundabouts, overpasses, detours, as well as both temporary and permanent roadworks. Planning begins well before the vehicle’s first movement.

???? Transport Escort
Specialised escort vehicles, equipped in accordance with applicable regulations, ensure a smooth and safe passage, responding dynamically to real-time road conditions.

???? Documentation and Formalities
Permits, approvals, and agreements with road authorities and other institutions — we take care of every document required for a safe and legal transport operation.

????️ Detailed Logistics Planning
We select optimal transit times, plan alternative routes, monitor weather conditions, and consider all external factors that may impact execution.

Result?

???? Oversize transport is carried out safely, legally, and on time, with full control at every stage — from initial planning to final unloading.

Up to 22 m × 3,20 m × 4,50 m ≤ 49,99 t No pilotGeneral permit – Category I
26 m × 4,00 m × 4,50 m ≤ 79,90 t 1 pilot Category II or general permit
30 m × 4,50 m × 4,50 m ≤ 89,90 t 2 pilotsSpecial permit with route
Length ≥ 40 m / width ≥ 5 m (Catalonia)– Police escortRoute permits only
Length ≥ 50 m / width ≥ 5 m (rest of country)– Police escortRoute permits only
Over 50 m × 5,50 m × 5,00 m 150 t Police escortMaximum transports – police required

Additional rules for pilots and escort

  • Category I and II permits depend on dimensions; a pilot is mandatory only for Category II and larger dimensions.
  • Special route permits always require a pilot; the number of pilots increases with dimensions and mass.
  • A police escort is mandatory only for route permits and for very large dimensions (length/width, mass).
  • In Catalonia, a police escort applies from length ≥ 40 m; in the rest of the country from length ≥ 50 m; for all regions, width ≥ 5 m.
