Oversize Transport Permits

Free dimensions (trip allowed without a permit)

A permit is NOT required for the following standard combinations:

  • Tractor unit with semitrailer: 16.50 m × 2.55 m × 4.00 m / 40.00 t
  • Truck with trailer: 18.75 m × 2.55 m × 4.00 m / 40.00 t

Maximum permissible gross vehicle weight

Motor vehicles:

  • Two-axle: 18 t
  • Three-axle: 25 t / 26 t
  • Four-axle: 32 t

  • Axle arrangement 2 + 3: 40 t
  • Axle arrangement 3 + 3 (ISO container): 44 t
  • Axle arrangement 2 + 2: 36 t

Exceeding any of the above parameters (dimensions, gross weight, or axle loads) requires obtaining a permit for oversize transport.

  1. Single (one-time) permit
  • Scope: Authorizes a single trip only along a specified, specific route.
  • Vehicles: Applies to one vehicle combination (tractor + one semitrailer or trailer).
  • Validity: 1 month.
  1. Permanent permit
  • Scope: All national roads with an unlimited number of trips.
  • Vehicles: Applies to one vehicle combination (tractor + one semitrailer or trailer).
  • Validity: 1 year.

Depending on dimensions: from 4 to 8 business days.

The possibility of extension depends on whether the permit’s validity period has already started.

  1. If the validity period has already begun — unfortunately, it cannot be extended. A permit that has become valid must be used within the allotted time. If the trip is not completed before it expires, this may result in a violation of legal stay conditions.
  2. If the validity period has not yet started — there is usually a possibility to apply for an extension of the validity date or for date changes. This is most often associated with the need to submit a new application, present up-to-date documents, and incur additional costs.

Traffic bans for oversize transport in Serbia:

  • Weekend bans:
    • Friday: 15:00 – 24:00
    • Sunday: 00:00 – 24:00
  • Holiday bans:
    • On the day before a public holiday: 00:00 – 24:00
    • On the last day of a public holiday: 00:00 – 24:00

When additional expert opinions are required to obtain a Serbian permit for oversize vehicles

Additional opinions from relevant institutions are needed when the transported vehicle or combination meets at least one of the following conditions:

  • Gross weight:
    • Over 80 t on regional roads
    • Over 100 t on motorways
  • Vehicle width: over 3.50 m
  • Vehicle height: over 4.30 m

Cancellation costs depend on the stage of order processing and the timing of the cancellation in relation to the planned start of the escort operation.

The same principle applies to permit cancellations — the later the cancellation is made, the higher the potential costs, resulting from preparatory work already completed, submitted applications, and allocated resources.

1. Civil pilot escort:

A pilot vehicle is required if the transport exceeds any of the following parameters:

  • length: 21.00 m,
  • width: 3.00 m,
  • height: 4.30 m,
  • gross weight: 60 t.

2. Police (or substitute services) escort:

A police escort (or services with substitute authorization) is mandatory if the transport exceeds any of the following parameters:

  • length: 25.00 m,
  • width: 3.50 m,
  • height: 4.50 m,
  • gross weight: 80 t.
