Oversize Transport Permits

A permit is required if any one of the following parameters is exceeded:

  • Tractor unit with semi‑trailer: 16.50 m × 2.55 m × 4.00 m; 40 t
  • Truck with trailer: 18.75 m × 2.55 m × 4.00 m; 40 t
  • For technical or economic reasons.

If any of the parameters are exceeded, an oversize transport permit is required.

The permit category depends on the route and the dimensions of the transport.

I. STANDARD VEHICLES

  • Truck + trailer: 18.75 m + 2 m overhang × 3 m × 4.3 m – 44 t, max 12 t/axle

Exceptions:

  • 4‑axle truck – max 39 t
  • 5‑axle truck – max 50 t (conditions: ≤12 t/axle, axle load measurement, ≥3 steering axles, combination ≤50 t)
  • Combination with dolly: 25 m × 2.55 m × 4 m – 44 t
  • Crane counterweights: max 80 t
  • Construction machines: max 80 t, machine >30 t (multi‑machine transport – one machine >30 t)
  • Validity: 1 year

CATEGORY 2

Dimensions and weights:

  • Rigid truck: 17 m (12 + 5) × 3.5 m × 4.5 m
  • Tractor + semi‑trailer: 21.5 m (16.5 + 5) × 3.5 m × 4.5 m – 80 t
  • Truck + trailer: 20.75 m (18.75 + 2) × 3.5 m × 4.5 m – 80 t

Exceptions:

  • 4‑axle truck – 39 t
  • 5‑axle truck – 50 t (as in Cat. 1, but the gross weight of the combination may exceed 50 t)
  • Construction machinery: max 100 t, machine >45 t (multi‑machine transport – one machine >45 t)
  • Validity: 1 year

CATEGORY 3

Parameters and weights greater than in Category 2.

Exceptions:

  • Construction machinery: >100 t, axle loads >12 t/axle, machine >60 t (multi‑machine transport – one machine >60 t)
  • Validity: 3 months

II. NON‑STANDARD VEHICLES

CATEGORY 1

Dimensions and weights:

  • Tractor + semi‑trailer: 20 m (including max 2 m overhang) × 3 m × 4.3 m – 44 t
  • Truck + trailer: 23 m (21 + 2) × 3 m × 4.3 m – 44 t
Only the transport of construction machinery.

Exceptions:

  • Construction machinery: max 80 t, machine >30 t (one machine >30 t)
  • Validity: 1 year

CATEGORY 2

Dimensions and weights:

  • Tractor + semi‑trailer: 25 m (max 5 m overhang) × 3.5 m × 4.5 m – 80 t
  • Truck + trailer: 25 m × 3.5 m × 4.5 m – 80 t
Only the transport of construction machinery.

Exceptions:

  • Construction machinery: max 100 t, machine >45 t (one machine >45 t)
  • Validity: 1 year

CATEGORY 3

Parameters and weights greater than in Category 2.

Exceptions:

  • Construction machinery: max 100 t, machine >45 t (one machine >45 t)
  • Validity: 1 year

III. MOBILE CRANES WITH COUNTERWEIGHTS

CATEGORY 1

  • Self‑propelled crane: 19 m × 3.5 m × 4.3 m – 80 t
  • Crane with counterweights: 22 m × 3.5 m × 4.3 m – 80 t
  • Validity: 1 year

CATEGORY 2

  • Self‑propelled crane: 22 m × 4 m × 4.5 m – 100 t
  • Crane with counterweights: 25 m × 4 m × 4.5 m – 100 t
  • Validity: 1 year

CATEGORY 3

  • Parameters and weights greater than in Category 2.
  • Validity: 3 months

Does the permit apply to a single route or several regions?

  • Route permit (streckenbezogen) – required if the dimensions exceed: 25,00 m × 3,50 m × 4,30 m // 80 t
  • Area permit (Flächenerlaubnis) – valid throughout Luxembourg if the dimensions are smaller than:
    25.00 m × 3.50 m × 4.30 m // 80 t

Above 25.00 × 3.50 × 4.30 m // 80 t: approximately 8–10 weeks

Below these dimensions: approximately 7–10 working days

Permits are not subject to extension. Once the validity period has expired, a new permit application must be submitted.

  • photo of the load / cargo
  • for loads over 100 t – technical drawing with axle loads and axle spacings
  • registration certificates of tractors and trailers
  • list of registration plates of tractors and trailers

According to the permit.

For vehicles with dimensions from 25.00 m × 3.50 m × 4.30 m // 80 t, night driving is allowed.

  • May be specified individually in the permit depending on the route, infrastructure, and the load’s weight and dimensions.
  • Possible requirements: additional escort vehicles, time restrictions, detours, safety conditions, etc.

Cancellation costs depend on the stage of order processing and the timing of the cancellation in relation to the planned start of the escort operation.

The same principle applies to permit cancellations — the later the cancellation is made, the higher the potential costs, resulting from preparatory work already completed, submitted applications, and allocated resources.

Organization of Oversize Transport Operations

Oversize transport is a complex logistics operation that requires precision, experience, and excellent coordination.

???? Professional Route Planning
We analyse every kilometre of the route: bridge load capacity, turning radii, roundabouts, overpasses, detours, as well as both temporary and permanent roadworks. Planning begins well before the vehicle’s first movement.

???? Transport Escort
Specialised escort vehicles, equipped in accordance with applicable regulations, ensure a smooth and safe passage, responding dynamically to real-time road conditions.

???? Documentation and Formalities
Permits, approvals, and agreements with road authorities and other institutions — we take care of every document required for a safe and legal transport operation.

????️ Detailed Logistics Planning
We select optimal transit times, plan alternative routes, monitor weather conditions, and consider all external factors that may impact execution.

Result?

???? Oversize transport is carried out safely, legally, and on time, with full control at every stage — from initial planning to final unloading.
