Oversize Transport Permits

Standard Dimensions – Transport Without a Permit: 

A permit is NOT required for the following standard vehicle combinations, provided that the permissible axle load limits are not exceeded:

  • Rigid truck (single-unit truck): 
  • 12,00 m x 2,60 m x 4,00 m 
  • Tractor unit + semi-trailer combination (5 axles): 
  • 16,50 m x 2,60 m x 4,00 m – 40 t 
  • Truck + trailer combination (5 axles):
  • 18,75 m x 2,60 m x 4,00 m – 40 t 

Key condition: Axle load limits for all axles must not be exceeded. The permissible values depend on the axle spacing, while the standard single-axle limit is usually 8,0 tonnes; however, higher limits apply to tandem axles and tridem axle groups.

Exceeding any of the above parameters (dimensions, gross vehicle weight, or axle load limits) requires obtaining a permit for abnormal transport.

Single-trip permits (One-Way)

  • Number of trips: Only one trip in one direction.
  • Scope: Valid only for one specific route.
  • Vehicles: The application applies to 1 tractor unit + 1 semi-trailer/trailer.
  • Validity: 
    • 3-4 dni: Jeśli zest3–4 days: If the vehicle combination enters Hungary through a border crossing without a weighing station at the border, or if the transport operation originates in Hungary. 
    • 30 days: Only if entry takes place through selected border crossings equipped with a weighing station directly at the border. These are: 
      • Slovakia: Slov. Nové Mesto / Sátoraljaújhely, Milhost / Tornyosnémeti
      • Ukraine: Cop/Záhony 
      • Romania: Petea/Csengersima, Bors/Ártánd, Varsand/Gyula 
      • Serbia: Horgos/Röszke, Subotica/Tompa 
      • Croatia: Knezevo/Udvar, Donji Mihojlac/Drávaszabolcs 
      • Austria: No such border crossings available.

Long-term permits (3, 6, or 12 months)

  • Maximum dimensions:
    • Without escort: 22,00 m x 3,20 m x 4,49 m 
    • With escort: 25,99 m x 3,49 m x 4,49 m 
  • Scope: Valid on all national roads (excluding Budapest), except for sections subject to restrictions (road signs) concerning height, width, or length.
  • Weight: Only the standard gross vehicle weight (40 t) and standard axle load limits are permitted.
  • Vehicles: The permit may include 1 tractor unit + up to 5 semi-trailers/trailers. The semi-trailers/trailers must have identical axle spacing.

Budapest: A long-term permit does not include Budapest. Entry into the capital requires a separate additional permit, which is only required if the loading or unloading address is located within the city. Transit through Hungary without entering Budapest does not require this permit.

Permit format: Road inspections accept permits in electronic form (on a tablet/mobile phone). However, it is recommended to carry a printed hard copy, as it may be requested during inspections on the M5 motorway near Lajosmizse or by the police.

Data required to obtain a permit:

  • Name, address (including postal code), and VAT number (NIP) of the transport company.
  • Registration numbers of the tractor unit and semi-trailer.
  • Unladen weight (separately for the tractor unit and the semi-trailer).
  • Number of axles.
  • Axle spacing (distance between axles).
  • Number of wheels on each axle.

Example of required data:

  • Registration numbers: ABC123+DEF456 
  • Unladen weight: 8,5 + 10,2 tonnes
  • Number of axles: 2+3 
  • Axle spacing: tractor unit 360 cm, semi-trailer 118 – 118 cm 
  • Number of wheels per axle: 2 – 4 – 2 – 2 – 2 

  • Standard processing time: max. 4–5 business days.
  • Over 35,00 m / 4,50 m / 4,50 m / 120 t: at least 1 week.
  • Over 40,00 m / 5,00 m / 4,60 m / 130 t: at least 2 weeks.

There is no possibility to extend the validity of an already issued permit. In such a case, a new permit application must be submitted.

  • Scanned copies of vehicle registration certificates must be provided (for each vehicle separately; black-and-white scans are acceptable; max. 2 MB per file) for both the tractor unit and the semi-trailer. The documents must be valid.
  • For transports exceeding 40,00 x 5,00 x 5,00 m / 130 t: additionally, already at the time of application, a three-view drawing of the loaded vehicle combination is required (to scale, showing the load layout and securing methods).

  • Up to 26,00 x 3,50 x 5,00 m / 60 t: Driving is permitted day and night.
  • Above 26,00 x 3,50 x 5,00 m: Driving is permitted only between 19:00 – 06:00.
  • Above 60 t: 
    • On motorways (up to the M0 Budapest ring road): driving permitted 10:00 – 15:00 and 19:00 – 06:00. 
    • On the M0 ring road: driving permitted only between 19:00 – 06:00. 
  • Budapest: Driving hours are determined individually by the road authority, depending on dimensions and the specific address. They cannot be predicted in advance.

Cancellation costs depend on the stage of order processing and the timing of the cancellation in relation to the planned start of the escort operation.

The same principle applies to permit cancellations — the later the cancellation is made, the higher the potential costs, resulting from preparatory work already completed, submitted applications, and allocated resources.

Rules for civilian, police, and substitute escorting in Hungary

The following regulations define when and how many escort vehicles are required. The rules differ depending on whether the transport is carried out on motorways or on other roads.

A. REGULATIONS APPLICABLE ON MOTORWAYS

Escort requirements on motorways are as follows:

Due to LENGTH:

  • Above 22,00 m: 1 escort vehicle required. 
  • Above 30,00 m: 1 escort vehicle required. 
  • Above 35,00 m: 2 escort vehicles required. 
  • Above 40,00 m: 2 escort vehicles and police escort required.

Due to WIDTH:

  • Above 3,20 m: 1 escort vehicle required. 
  • Above 3,50 m: 1 escort vehicle required. 
  • Above 4,00 m: 2 escort vehicles required. 
  • Above 4,50 m: 2 escort vehicles required. 
  • Above 5,00 m: 2 escort vehicles and police escort required.

Due to HEIGHT:

  • Above 4,50 m: 1 escort vehicle required.
  • Above 5,00 m: 2 escort vehicles required. 

Due to WEIGHT:

  • Above 60,0 ton: no escort is required.
  • Above 70,0 t: 1 escort vehicle required. 
  • Above 100,0 t: 1 escort vehicle required. 
  • Above 130,0 t: 1 escort vehicle and police escort required.

B. REGULATIONS APPLICABLE ON OTHER ROADS (non-motorways)

Escort requirements on roads other than motorways are stricter:

  • Above 3,50 m: 2 escort vehicles required.
  • Above 4,00 m: 2 escort vehicles required.
  • Above 4,50 m: 2 escort vehicles and police escort required.
  • Above 5,00 m: 2 escort vehicles and police escort required.

Due to HEIGHT:

  • Above 4,50 m: 1 escort vehicle required.
  • Above 5,00 m: 2 escort vehicles required.

Due to WEIGHT:

  • Above 60,0 t: 1 escort vehicle required.
  • Above 70,0 t: 1 escort vehicle required.
  • Above 100,0 t: 2 escort vehicles required.
  • Above 130,0 t: 2 escort vehicles and police escort required.

C. SPECIAL RULES FOR BUDAPEST

In the city of Budapest, additional stricter regulations apply:

  • Above 20,00 m in length or 3.00 m in width: 1 escort vehicle required.
  • Above 22,00 m in length or 3,20 m in width: 2 escort vehicles required.

Note: The above rules may be subject to change, and escort requirements should always be confirmed for the specific route and transport parameters stated in the issued permit.
