Oversize Transport Permits

Standard Dimensions (Transport Without Permit): 

  • Rigid truck: 12 m × 2.55 m × 4 m 
  • Tractor unit + semi‑trailer: 16.5 m × 2.55 m × 4 m, 40 t  
  • Truck + trailer: 18.75 m × 2.55 m × 4 m, 40 t   

If any of these parameters are exceeded, an abnormal transport permit is required. 

Short-term permit 

  • Validity: 1–3 months
  • Purpose: a single trip or a specified route
  • Scope: authorises travel on a specific route from point A to point B, for a specified vehicle combination and load dimensions
  • Number of trips: indication of the number of journeys is required

Transit permit 

  • Validity: 1 year
  • Scope: authorises travel on multiple routes, up to 5 routes in total
  • Maximum dimensions and weight:
    • Width: 3.25 m
    • Height: 4.3 m
    • Weight: 60 t
  • Number of trips: unlimited number of trips.

Permanent permit

  • Validity: up to 3 years
  • Maximum dimensions and weight:
    • Without §70: 20.5 × 3 × 4 m (including 4 m overhang); 40 t
    • With §70: 23 × 3 × 4 m; 41.8 t
  • Number of trips: unlimited number of trips

Combinations of vehicle sets under the permits  

(applies to all types of permits)

  • Without §70: Any configurations of vehicle combinations are possible under the granted permit, with the possibility of many combinations.
  • With §70: Applies to identical combinations; the allowed combinations are:
    • 5 tractor units / 5 semi-trailers
    • 5 tractor units / 10 semi-trailers
    • 10 tractor units / 5 semi-trailers

  • Permanent permit: 1–5 working days 
  • Short-term permit: depending on parameters and route; it is recommended to submit the application at least 2 weeks before the planned transit
  • Long-term permit (multiple routes): it is best to submit the application at least one month in advance

Cancellation costs depend on the stage of order processing and the timing of the cancellation in relation to the planned start of the escort operation.

The same principle applies to permit cancellations — the later the cancellation is made, the higher the potential costs, resulting from preparatory work already completed, submitted applications, and allocated resources.

Expert report (Gutachten) and §70 StVZO – comprehensive support

Exceeding dimensions or weight

The decision is always up to the competent authority issuing the permit.

Number of escort vehicles 

Depending on the transport parameters and the authority’s decision, the required number of escort vehicles ranges from 1 to 5. 

Types of escort vehicles

  • BF 2 – a basic escort vehicle with yellow lights and CB radio; it supports transport mainly off motorways or with smaller dimensions. Its role is to keep the driver informed about obstacles and difficulties along the route. 
  • BF 3 – an escort vehicle with a light board (3 warning signs) and full safety equipment, operated by a licensed pilot. This is the most commonly used type; it is responsible for coordinating and securing the transit, warning other road users and securing stops.
  • BF 3+ – an extended version of BF 3 that allows the display of several different signs. Its role is to provide additional information and traffic control in more complex transport conditions.
  • BF 4 – the most advanced vehicle, with a light board displaying signs in all directions; special qualifications and experience are required. It provides comprehensive protection for oversized transport, ensuring the highest level of visibility and communication on the route.

Police escort and substitute services

  • Decision parameters – The authority’s decision depends on the route parameters and the characteristics of the transport. 
  • Notification deadline – As a rule, the notification must be submitted at least 2 working days before the planned day of transit.
