Oversize Transport Permits

Standard Dimensions – Transport Without a Permit

A vehicle may operate on public roads without a permit provided it complies with the following limits:

Maximum Permissible Dimensions and Gross Weight:

  • Length: up to 16,50 m
  • Width: up to 2,55 m
  • Height: up to 4,00 m
  • Gross vehicle weight: up to 40,00 t

Exceeding any of the above parameters (even a single one) requires obtaining a transport permit.

Single-Trip Permit (Monthly Permit)

  • Scope: One specific route
  • Validity: 30 days
  • It is possible to apply for a monthly permit covering multiple trips; however, this option is not available for all cases of exceeding standard limits (does not apply to “über gewisse Maße”).

Permanent Permit (Annual Permit):

Category 1: Standard Combination (Non-Extendable Trailer)

  • Application: Tractor unit with a trailer of fixed dimensions.
  • Permissible Overall Dimensions:
    • Length: 20,50 m (including a maximum rear overhang of 4,00 m)
    • Width: 3,50 m
    • Height: 4,30 m (motorways) / 4,20 m (non-motorway roads)
    • Gross vehicle weight: 60,00 t

Category 2: Extendable Trailer Combination (Specialized Transport)

  • Application: Tractor unit with an extendable trailer.
  • Permissible Overall Dimensions:
    • Length: 25,00 m (tractor unit + trailer + overhang, including a maximum overhang of 4,00 m)
    • Width: 3,50 m
    • Height: 4,30 m (motorways) / 4,20 m (non-motorway roads)
    • Gross vehicle weight: up to 60,00 t (final value depends on the permitted payload of the vehicle combination)

Key Information and Explanations:

  • Dimension Clarification:
    • Category 1: The total permitted length of 20,50 m consists of the tractor-trailer combination (max. 16,50 m) plus the portion of the load extending beyond the trailer (rear overhang, max. 4,00 m).
    • Category 2: The total permitted length of 25,00 m includes the tractor unit, the extended trailer, and the load overhang (max. 4,00 m).
  • Permit Validity Scope:
    • The permit is valid on federal roads (motorways, expressways, and national roads).
    • It does not cover travel on roads within the Vienna area.
    • It does not include separate municipal permits required by other cities.
  • Validity Period: The permit is valid for 365 days from the date of issue.

Annual Permits (Jahresgenehmigung): ~ approximately up to 7 business days

Single-Trip Permits (Einzelgenehmigung): A minimum processing time of 14 business days should be expected. The final processing time depends on the transport route, as approval must be obtained from each federal state and the relevant road authority involved.

It is not possible to extend the validity of an already issued permit. In such cases, a new permit application must be submitted.

Scanned copy of the vehicle registration certificates for the tractor unit and trailer (or semi-trailer)

  • Relevant vehicle approval document (one of the following):
    • EC Certificate of Conformity (CoC),
    • TÜV technical certificate,
    • GUTACHTEN certificate (e.g. issued by DEKRA),
    • Document confirming road approval of the vehicle, known as §70.
  • Authorizations and declarations – Vollmacht (Power of Attorney), Haftunsgserklärung (Declaration of Liability).

Regulations vary across each federal state (Bundesland)

Specific restrictions (e.g., night driving bans or weekend restrictions) are always defined in the issued permit. There are no uniform, fixed rules applicable nationwide.

Example: In the federal state of Tyrol (Tirol), there is generally a complete night driving ban for abnormal (oversize) transport.

Cancellation costs depend on the stage of order processing and the timing of the cancellation in relation to the planned start of the escort operation.

The same principle applies to permit cancellations — the later the cancellation is made, the higher the potential costs, resulting from preparatory work already completed, submitted applications, and allocated resources.

Organization of Oversize Transport Operations

Oversize transport is a complex logistics operation that requires precision, experience, and excellent coordination.

???? Professional Route Planning
We analyse every kilometre of the route: bridge load capacity, turning radii, roundabouts, overpasses, detours, as well as both temporary and permanent roadworks. Planning begins well before the vehicle’s first movement.

???? Transport Escort
Specialised escort vehicles, equipped in accordance with applicable regulations, ensure a smooth and safe passage, responding dynamically to real-time road conditions.

???? Documentation and Formalities
Permits, approvals, and agreements with road authorities and other institutions — we take care of every document required for a safe and legal transport operation.

????️ Detailed Logistics Planning
We select optimal transit times, plan alternative routes, monitor weather conditions, and consider all external factors that may impact execution.

Result?

???? Oversize transport is carried out safely, legally, and on time, with full control at every stage — from initial planning to final unloading.

Escort of Oversize Transport Operations

Escort Regulations

  • The requirement to use escort vehicles, their number, and any additional conditions (e.g. overtaking restrictions) depend on the regulations of the respective federal state (Bundesland) and are precisely defined in the permit itself. These conditions cannot be determined in general terms.
  • Police Escort: In Austria, there is generally no police escort for oversize transport.
  • Priority Vehicles (Stufe IV): In cases of extremely oversized transports, it is possible to use special priority escort vehicles (Stufe IV), equipped with blue lights (Blaulicht). In such situations, a minimum of four escort vehicles is mandatory.
